Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the right to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
