Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Performance

Mercedes are second in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three races left in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
