The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
