RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
